Sunday savvy

--gillena cox

Many Caribbean people will remember those days of our childhood, when we were (yuk!!!) forced into
drinking potions of well meaning cups of (foul tasting) bush tea for all kinds of disorders, most common of aliments, coughs, colds and fevers. Then we grew up and our travels around planet earth tooks us to various climes, traditions and samplings of cultures and we now encounter the stylish term of herbs. Or we start browsing the grocery counters for all kinds of (alternative medicines) in the form of attractively packaged 'herbal teas' - good anitoxidants, great stess relievers, etc etc and on reading the lables we muse, Oh yes my mum used to give us such and such to drink for such and such ailments.

Why am i talking bush tea and herbs this Sunday? Well, still fresh in my mind is yesterday's Book Club Mingle (a meeting of more than one of our Nalis book clubs) in celebration of our reading the series 'The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency' written by Alexander Mc Call Smith. We skyped the author (he in Edinburgh) and (we here in downtown Port of Spain) and chattered with him about his life his work his passion for writing. The main character in these books, Precious Ramotswe loves and is always drinking or offering to someone cups of red bush tea. Our day's session included a tour of The Nalis building, a session on African wrapping of clothing for head and body styles, a game which quizzed groups on the books in the series, time to intermingle chat and get to know persons from each book club, and a viewing in part of the HBO production of one of the books. How's your weekend going?

long after dawn birds
shifting patches of azure ...
Sunday savvy

--gillena cox

For many, Sunday is a day of reflection; after a busy working week, comes Sunday; many put aside time to go to church, others just to read the Sunday newspaper. A good day to gently swing in your hammock, those of us who have one, recline in a comfortable chair, plop down on a beach towel, etc etc etc. What's special about all of these, and similiar quiet Sunday activities? Such persons seem to, and may be chided for, doing nothing; but really, a deep contemplative action is taking place.

What are you reflective about this Sunday? for me its all that nice vibe out on the main road yesterday, during promotion for Great Race August 24th 2013. Revisit Great Race 2012 Website

SALT AND GREEN GUAVAS

it all makes sense
my childhood landscape reviewed...
salt and green guavas

gravity dictates
head in clouds
feet in shoes

a quiet breath
sends a whispered prayer
shadow fades to light

daily bread...
plans already drawn
building the kingdom

threadbare clichés only wear one out

--gillena cox

(i created the image of 'green guavas' after seeing some, while out on an errand, weeks ago; and filed it. Since i was sharing my NaHaiWriMo prompts here during the month of August; i haven't written a wordle response in a while; today, i decided to get back to the wordles, after looking at this week's, i started doodling with the words, and realized i could use the 'green guavas' image to haiga, to introduce, and to title; so hope you enjoy SALT AND GREEN GUAVAS )
